Environment for testing tools help

I am currently studying for the CEH. I am patiently waiting for my recently ordered Alfa AWUS036H to arrive.

I have a question for all you fellow offensive penetration testers. What environment would you recommend that is legal, and cheap, preferably free, to test networking hacks?

To clarify, I would like to test Nmap commands, port scanning, HPing, Netcat, and even web server attacks.

My restriction is I have only two laptops.

I would strongly recommend you visit the VMWare website and you take a look at the free VMWare Player version 3.1. It allow you to run and create Virtual Machines.

Using Virtual machine would allow you to run Backtrack which has all of the tools you need plus it is working well with your new card as well. You can get a VM preinstalled with Backtrack at:

http://www.backtrack-linux.org/downloads/

It is the second download on the page.

you can do a lot of the testing between your VM and the Laptop you have or the other host you have.

That would be a great start for you as a small lab
